Replacing an internal door
About Me
Replacing an internal door

When my house was renovated in the 1970s they replaced the beautiful old doors with cheap plywood doors. I wanted to replace our current doors with some feature doors that help to emphasise the beautiful dimensions of our house while allowing us to make the most of the light and warmth in the different rooms. I have compared options with a range of different doors before making my final decision. This blog talks about our project to select new doors in our home and I hope it will be useful to other people who are trying a similar project and replacing their internal doors.

Considerations to Bear in Mind When Selecting a Home Security Door

Priscilla Graham

A home security screen door provides all the benefits of a fly screen but with an additional security aspect. You can enjoy the free flow of air and light without insects and feel safe at the same time. However, you should be careful when picking a door to ensure it is genuinely secure and enhances rather than detracts from the kerb view. Below are several considerations to bear in mind to help you end up with the right model.

Security

The most important thing, of course, about a security door is how well it secures your home. The frame should be sturdy and not easily stripped away, and the mesh should be tough enough so it can't be quickly slashed. The lock should also be tamper-proof, and the hinges should be immovable.

It's hard for a layperson to judge these things, so the best insurance you can get when choosing a security door model is to ensure that it has labels showing that it's compliant with Australian standards: AS5039, AS5040 and AS5041. These regulations specify how a security door should be manufactured, tested and installed. Look out also for additional information regarding how a door fared during testing and whether it exceeded the minimum standards, which would make it even more secure.

Design

The door's design is also important; they come in various styles, ranging from modern to traditional. You could pick a door with clean and straightforward grillwork for a contemporary home or a door with decorative scrolls for a traditional house.

The colour is also paramount to the kerb appeal of the door. You can match the door to the frame or window trim, or choose a contrasting black door if the trim is white. If you have a light-coloured house, you could choose a soft pink or cream door for a coastal effect. The most minimalist screen door style is mesh with no grillwork. These will be almost invisible from the inside as well as the outside.

You can choose different styles of security doors for other areas of your home. For example, select a decorative hinged door for the front of the house and a streamlined sliding security door for the back.

Installation

The toughness of the actual door is one thing, but its installation is another. Even if a door is sturdy and compliant with the relevant manufacturing standards, it can fail if installed incorrectly and is easily pulled off the hinges. That's why it's crucial to have the security door professionally installed in line with standards by an expert.
